The Picos de Europa

The Picos are partly in Asturias, partly Cantabria and partly Castile & Leon. The area lies just southwest of the Cantabrican coast. A labyrinth of peaks rises to 2600 metres but the effect is much greater. These mountains are steep and jagged and the valleys between them are deep, with rushing torrents and often impassible. Snow lies on the north faces all year round. People come from all over the world to climb, trekk, camp, walk and take photos.

We have posted a few photographs to give our friends an idea of the lure of this area. These photos can be viewed one at a time. Use the Back button on your browser to return to this page.

There are many places to stay in the Picos but the most beautiful is the valley at the top of the Cares Gorge, called Valdeon. This is a great starting point for many excellent walks. The best place to stay is the Hostal Corona in Posada de Valdeon (modern, clean and comfortable - tel: 987 740 578; fax 987 740 595). Tell them Go-Spain sent you.
